Keep it Simple and Safe – Snow Driving Tips
The weather forecasts are warning of up to two more weeks of cold weather with more snow on the way.
Motoring organisations recommend that in severe weather, only essential journeys should be made and with up to a fortnight of cold and snow, this is not realistic for a lot of people.
So to help you get on with your lives, we’ve put together some tips on how to stay safe on the road, driving on snow and ice.
Before You Start
-
Clear ice and snow from your windscreen, rear screen and windows before driving off
- Use sidelights or dipped beam headlights to increase visibility
-
Warm your engine and demist windows before moving off
-
Use a higher gear (2nd instead of 1st) with a little clutch and just enough gas to move off
-
For automatics, just let the car coast away in drive, don’t put your foot on the accelerator
-
For automatics, if you have an ice or snow button, select it to enable better handling
Driving on Snow and Ice
- Drive like you would walk on ice – S L O W L Y
- Double your distance from the vehicle in front
- Look well ahead and ease off the gas early
- Slow the vehicle before turning your steering wheel
Braking on Snow and Ice
- Use your gears early to slow the car instead of using brakes wherever possible
- Avoid sudden braking – think and plan ahead
- If you have to use the brakes, make it gentle and early so that Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS) can work if needed
- If you don’t have ABS, brake gently and early and be prepared to lift off if your brakes lock
- If you are going down-hill, lower the gear (2nd instead of 3rd) to use engine braking
